Aims

To further improve the students' fluency in written and spoken Basque;

To consolidate and extend students' previous language skills;

To provide a better command of Basque communication skills;

To encourage regular independent language learning throughout the module.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Acquire the ability to understand conversations and explanations both in the media and in face-to-face situations, especially if they fall in the area of everyday life.

(LO2) Acquire the ability to understand most of texts related to day-to-day situations and to distinguish primary and secondary ideas.

(LO3) Acquire the ability to interact with fluency in casual conversations, giving explanations, opinions, arguments, etc.

(LO4) Acquire the ability to write overall clear and well-structured texts, paraphrase various sources and unfold arguments.

(LO5) Acquire a more extended understanding of the main structural differences between Basque as a non-Indo-European language and its neighbouring languages.

(LO6) Acquire a wider knowledge of contemporary Basque society and culture and its most peculiar characteristics

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Seminar:
Description: Students learn new aspects of Basque grammar and new vocabulary through independent study using the on-line computer aided method BOGA. In this session, the students practice the grammar and vocabulary previously learnt and revised through a range of listening, reading, and speaking activities.

Topics covered during the module may include:

The past forms of the Nor-Nori-Nork verb paradigm;

The past forms of the Nor-Nori verb paradigm;

The past forms of the synthetic verbs egon, ibili, joan, etorri, eduki, eraman, ekarri, esan, jakin;

Comparative clauses: hain/hainbeste; beste;

Relative clauses: -dako/-tako;

Concessive clauses: nahiz eta, arren;

Cause clauses: dela eta; zeren eta; bait-.
