Aims

To take students into the first stages of and intermediate level of command of Basque, acquiring language skills that will allow them to interact simply but effectively in familiar and routine matters;

To enhance students’ understanding of the peculiarities of Basque as a non-Indo-European language, and so help them realize how varied human languages can be in structure;

To extend students’ knowledge of contemporary Basque society and culture;

To reinforce students’ awareness of the similarities and dissimilarities between the contemporary view of the world associated to Basque and the view of the world in their own languages and cultures.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Acquire the ability to understand phrases and the highest frequency vocabulary in areas of immediate personal relevance and the capacity to catch the main point in short and clear messages.

(LO2) Acquire the ability to understand descriptive and narrative texts dealing with familiar objects, actions, and activities written in present or future tense, and embracing quite a wide range of subordinate clause

(LO3) Acquire the ability to interact with certain fluency on familiar topics and activities.

(LO4) Acquire the ability to write descriptive and narrative texts dealing with familiar objects, actions, and activities in present or future tense, and embracing quite a wide range of subordinate clauses

(LO5) Acquire a more extended understanding of the main structural differences that Basque as a non-Indo-European language shows in comparison with its neighbouring languages

(LO6) Acquire a wider knowledge of contemporary Basque society and culture and its most peculiar characteristics

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Seminar:
Students learn new aspects of Basque grammar and new vocabulary through independent study using the on-line computer aided method BOGA. In this session, the students practice the grammar and vocabulary previously learnt and revised through a range of analytic exercises, listening, reading, writing and speaking activities.

Online:
As noted above, students work on BOGA to learn new grammar structures and vocabulary. They spend arou nd four hours a week during term time working on this computer aided method.

Unscheduled Directed Student Hours (time spent away from the timetabled sessions but directed by the teaching staff): 60.

Causal clauses: -elako;

Conditional clauses: ba-…, …-ko;

Completive clauses: -ela/ -enik;
