Aims

To further improve students' fluency in written and spoken Basque;

To consolidate and extend students' prior language skills;

To enable student to acquire an excellent command of Basque grammar and above all be able to apply it in a diverse range of contexts, by using appropriate writing and oral skills;

To encourage regular independent learning.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Acquire the ability to understand the main ideas of complex topics in conversations and explanations both in the media and in face-to-face situations.

(LO2) Acquire the ability to understand texts related to day-to-day situations, distinguishing primary and secondary ideas, and grasping nuances and the writer’s standpoint.

(LO3) Acquire the ability to make descriptions and give explanations in professional areas of one’s own expertise.

(LO4) Acquire the ability to write clear and well-structured texts, paraphrase various sources and give one’s own opinion, conveying with clarity arguments for and against.

(LO5) Acquire a more extended understanding of the main structural differences between Basque as a non-Indo-European language and its neighbouring languages.

(LO6) Acquire a wider knowledge of contemporary Basque society and culture and its most peculiar characteristics

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Seminar:
Students learn new aspects of Basque grammar and new vocabulary through independent study using the on-line computer aided method BOGA. In this session, the students practice the grammar and vocabulary previously learnt and revised through a range of listening, reading, and speaking activities.

The various sets of conditional auxiliary verbs both in their present/future forms and in their past forms: nor; nor-nork; nor-nori; and nor-nori-nork;

Temporal clauses: orduko; -en bakoitzean/gehienetan; -enetik;

Explanation clauses: -enez;

Adversative clauses: izan ezik;

Conditional clauses: -t(z)ekotan; -z gero;

Purpose clauses: -t(z)earren;

Cause clauses: -t(z)eagatik;

Consecutive clauses: hain...ezen;

Reciprocity: elkar;

Reflexivity: bere burua.
