Aims

To provide students with a command of basic language structures and vocabulary that will allow them to start communicating in Basque in a variety of everyday situations;

To provide students with an understanding of the peculiarities of Basque as a non-Indo-European language, and so help them realize how varied human languages can be in structure;

To introduce students to a number of aspects of contemporary Basque society and culture, especially the most characteristic and peculiar ones;

To start developing in students an awareness of the similarities and dissimilarities between the contemporary view of the world associated with Basque and the view of the world in their own languages and cultures.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Acquire the ability to recognise familiar words and basic phrases concerning immediate surroundings and everyday situations when people speak slowly.

(LO2) Acquire the ability to understand descriptive and narrative texts dealing with familiar objects, actions, and activities written in the present tense

(LO3) Acquire the ability to interact in a simple way provided that the other person is ready to repeat or rephrase things.

(LO4) Acquire the ability to write simple descriptions of people, familiar objects and places, and narratives of everyday situations in the present tense.

(LO5) Acquire an understanding of the main structural differences between Basque as a non-indoeuropean language and its neighbouring languages.

(LO6) Acquire an overall knowledge of contemporary Basque society and culture and its most peculiar characteristics.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Seminar:
Students learn new aspects of Basque grammar and new vocabulary through independent study using the on-line computer aided method BOGA. In this session, the students practice the grammar and vocabulary previously learnt and revised through a range of analytic exercises, listening, reading, writing and speaking activities.

General traits of the Basque language;

The NOR declension case (=who, what);

The verb IZAN (=to be);

Copulative sentences;

Negative sentences;

How to greet people. How to introduce oneself;

City tourism / the town;

Culture and society topic: A very brief history of the Basque language;

The NON declension case (=where);

The NONGO declension case (=where from);

The verb EGON (=to be);

The verbal locution BIZI IZAN (=to live);

Brief descriptions of people and places;

Seaside and countryside landscapes;

Culture and society topic: A contemporary geography of the Basque language;

The NORK declension case (=who, subject of transitive verbs);

The verb EDUN (=to have);

The partitive -(R)IK;

The PRESENT PERFECT tense;

The numbers 1 to 100;

The time;

The imperative;

The house, the office. Leisure t ime activities;

The PRESENT PERFECT tense;

The NOREN declension case (=whose, the genitive);

Space postpositions: aurrean, atzean, gainean, azpian;

The -TZEN nominalisation;

Summer festivals / family relations;
