Aims

Develop a very basic competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking Chinese;

Provide students with an understanding of very basic structures of Chinese grammar;

Provide an introduction to the culture and society of China;

Develop some intercultural understanding.

Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Apply basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in line with the HSK THRESHOLD level

(LO2) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basic structures of Chinese.

(LO3) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the culture of China.

(S1) Communication skills – basic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the target language

Teaching and Learning Strategies

This module is taught through 24 general language classes, which include reading, writing, listening and speaking exercises and grammar teaching and practice. Students have a chance to consolidate and practice the structures and vocabulary acquired in conversation, discussions, short presentations and short writing and note taking exercises. Chinese will be the main language of teaching in class. Students are expected to attend all classes, to hand in homework and the portfolio on time and to work through the assigned exercises independently. The module offers much accompanying material, including online resources, which can be used for independent study in the library. Regular feedback forms an integral part of the module.

Introductory course in Chinese language: grammar, translation and written and spoken communication; The syllabus can be found in the module handbook which can be accessed through CANVAS; A weekly schedule for the module will be issued at the beginning of the semester.
