Aims

This module aims to help students to understand and translate a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning;

To enable students to express him / herself fluently;

To use Chinese flexibly for social purposes and academic purposes;

To produce clear, well structured, detailed texts on complex subjects;

The module also aims to help students to explore more aspects of Chinese society and culture through the study of its language.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Be able to read and translate texts of 2500 Chinese words.

(LO2) Know how to write the new characters with the right order of strokes and radicals.

(LO3) Know Chinese grammar at proficient level.

(LO4) Further consolidate presentation and speaking skills for social and professional purposes.

(LO5) Understand the social and political situation in China

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

Seminar:
The seminars (delivered by a native speaker) will help students to improve listening, speaking and extensive reading skills along with the related cultural knowledge.

Lecture:
The lectures (delivered by a native speaker) will help students to acquire the relevant vocabulary, grammar and cultural knowledge, and improve skills of reading, writing and translation.

Portfolio:
Students will do exercises/drills every week for correction or feedback, and compare their assignments of different stages for more reflections on learning.

Dealing with complaints; understanding complaints; identifying a speaker’s worries; understanding a personal letter; giving advice; showing empathy and support;

Participating in a competition; understanding encouragement; identifying worries and concerns; understanding an announcement for a competition; showing care and support; encouraging people in a competition;

Topics for debates and speeches; identifying agreements and disagreements; understanding arguments and supporting facts in an essay; agreeing and disagreeing; giving an apology;

Understanding people’s concerns; recognizing appreciation; identifying feelings and emotions; understanding an interview; showing empathy and appreciation; giving support and encouragement;

Talking about pains and gains; understanding retrospection and expectations; understanding a narrative passage; showing disagreement and support; expressing surprise and j oy; talking about past and future.
