Aims

Develop further all the skills necessary to communicate confidently and effectively in spoken and written Italian, including reading and listening competences;

Consolidate existing knowledge of Italian language while learning more complex structures;

Enable students to develop further language learning strategies and fosters a reflective approach as well as the ability to work collaboratively and independently;

Encourage students to explore aspects of contemporary Italian culture and to reflect on some current Italian issues through the medium of Italian in preparation for the Year Abroad.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching method 1 - seminar.
The module is taught by two weekly language classes, one of which is dedicated to grammar/syntax, as well as one language laboratory session and one oral class per week. Consistent use of the target language, the personal contribution of students and a collaborative approach are important elements of the module.
Notes: i) One hour grammar; ii) One hour reading and writing skills; iii) One hour oral practice; iv) One hour listening comprehension

Teaching method 2 - tutorial.
Tutorials are periodically arranged to discuss performance in tests and coursework and to provide additional support where necessary. Introductory notes to the module include information and guidance on semester programme, weekly schedule, workload and assessment. The module is intensive and students are expected to attend all sessions, to hand in regular directed work, to take active part in all sessions and to follow up classes with further reading and listening a ctivities. A good range of supporting multimedia facilities are located either in the Language Lounge or in the Sydney Jones Library.


Syllabus

 

This module will expand the students' knowledge of the Italian language by looking at grammar aspects like the tenses of the past and their contrast, the use of the subjunctive, and conditional sentences. Topics covered will related to students' interests and may be chosen with the students, typically they will include young people, language variety, Italian cinema and literature, music.
