Aims

To introduce students to issues relating to post-unification and fascist Italy and to past and current debates surrounding multilingual, multicultural and multiethnic Italy;

To develop subject-specific skills appropriate to a range of areas in Italian studies and generic study skills, so that students are prepared for level two modules within the Italian curriculum;

To enhance critical analysis and independent thinking.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lecture:
The module is delivered through lectures and seminars. Lectures provide information and orientation on key events and issues. These activities will constitute preparation for required assignments.

Seminar:
Seminars will involve a range of individual and group activities, such as analysing, comparing, summarising and presenting materials (i.e. texts, data and film/documentaries). These activities will constitute preparation for required assignments.

Tutorial:
Individual tutorials are available in week seven when students will receive feedback and have an opportunity to discuss progress.

The making of the Italian State: a transnational perspective;

The Italian Fascist Empire;

The languages of Italy;

Language and nation: the Italian case;

What is (Italian) literature;

Italian canon(s);

The Italian diaspora through film analysis;

Representations of migration across the Mediterranean.
