Aims

Develop all the skills necessary to begin to communicate confidently in spoken and written Italian, including basic competence in reading and listening;

Provide students with a sound understanding of the basic structures of the Italian grammar;

Encourage students to explore some aspects of contemporary Italian culture through the medium of Italian;

Develop useful language learning strategies and a reflective approach as well as the ability to work collaboratively and independently.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Seminar:
The language is studied ab-initio and no previous knowledge is required. The module is taught by a weekly seminar on Italian grammar, a seminar on Italian texts, with reading and writing practice, a speaking practice tutorial and a language laboratory session. Consistent use of the target language after the first few weeks, the personal contribution of students and a collaborative approach are important elements of the module.

Introductory notes to the module include information and guidance on semester programme, weekly schedule, workload, assessment and a bibliography of supporting multimedia facilities. These are located either in the Language Lounge or in the Sydney Jones Library.

This module is intensive and requires regular commitment. Students are expected to attend all sessions, to hand in weekly directed work and to follow up classes with further reading and listening activities. To foster a reflective approach to learning students are encouraged t o compile a personal learning diary to inform a reflective component in their coursework and to discuss progress at tutorials.

Notes: i) One hour for grammar; ii) One hour for reading and writing skills; iii) One hour for oral practice; iv) One hour for listening comprehension.

Tutorial:
Description: Group tutorials are arranged to discuss performance in tests and coursework and to provide additional support where necessary.
Notes: Taking place in tutorial week

Assessment:
i) Portfolio week eight (language activities); ii) listening comprehension test in week 11 or 12; Written Exam.


Syllabus

 

This module is an introductory module in Italian language and will cover grammar basic aspects like noun gender and number, articles, the present and perfect tense, modal verbs, prepositions and direct pronouns.
The topics covered will include:

Personal information;

Family life;

Education and university life.
