Aims

To deepen students’ understanding of core theoretical concepts in sociolinguistics;

To explore the particularities of the sociolinguistic context of Spain; To introduce students to sociolinguistic research methodologies;

To enable students to manipulate and apply SL theory and practice.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method - Seminars
These will provide an introduction to key topics and also will allow students to present their own ideas, making reference to the reading material that will be suggested each week. Seminars will include an element of formative assessment, and students will be expected to deliver short group presentations on a previously agreed week.

The origins of Spanish;

Language ideologies;

Language policy;

Language and gender;

Language and education;

Regional and social variation in Spain;

Case study: The Basque Country;

Case study: Catalonia;

Case study: Galicia.
