Aims |
|
To provide a stimulating learning environment in which students develop their linguistic skills in Spanish; To enable students to understand both written and spoken Spanish and analyse the linguistic nature of Spanish; To enhance and develop the oral and listening practical skills; To assist the students in speaking Spanish accurately and fluently. |
Learning Outcomes |

(LO1) Students will be able to consolidate and extend their existing knowledge and ability to use the Spanish language by developing all skills: speaking, listening, reading, writing and interacting. |

(LO2) Students will develop their translation and written skills and be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the structures, lexicon and registers of Spanish. |

Syllabus |

Topics covered during the module may include: News; Current affairs; Cultural diversity; Culture and society topics include: Understanding and discussing social, political, economic and work life issues in Spain and Latin America. Grammar topics include: Past tenses; Direct and indirect objects; Infinite versus subjunctive. Seminars: Writing objectives: Writing clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects related to the students’ interests; Writing essays or reports, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view; Writing letters highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences. Reading objectives: Reading articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints; Understanding contemporary literary prose. Spoken production objectives: Presenting clear, d etailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to the students’ field(s)of interest; Explaining a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. Practical sessions: Spoken interaction objectives: Interacting with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible; Taking active part in discussions in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining the students’ views. Laboratory work: Listening comprehension objectives: Understanding and practicing and extended speech and lectures and following even complex lines of argument; Working on TV news and current affairs programmes; Watching and working on films in a variety of linguistic registers. |
