Aims

To expose students to a range of literary styles and genres in both English and French, encouraging them to conduct close literary analyses of texts; To enhance students’ translation skills through a close reading of the source text; To develop students' self-reflective skills, encouraging them to think critically about and justify translation choices.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Undertake a close analysis of a variety of written styles, in both English and French, and use this analysis to inform translation choices and strategies.

(LO2) Gain a broad knowledge of different literary genres, movements and authors, in both Anglophone and Francophone contexts.

(LO3) Translate a range of texts into English and French to a high level of proficiency, and identify different registers of both English and French and render these accurately in the target language.

(LO4) Use bilingual and monolingual dictionaries and online resources to research conventions        of usage, find synonyms, and explore nuances of meaning.  

(LO5) Use specialist terminology accurately and appropriately in order to justify translation choices and strategies.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Seminar
Description: This module is taught by weekly seminars, focusing alternately on thème and version. Seminars are student-led and are based around group work, peer review and cultural exchange through the interaction of Anglophone and Francophone students. Students are provided from week to week with source material drawn from different genres to prepare for class. Through group work and subsequent class discussion, students are encouraged to debate different translation choices and techniques with a view to justifying their resulting target text.

Syllabus

 

Teaching weeks will focus alternately on thème and on version, so students will be exposed to an equal number of texts to translate from French-English and from English-French. Certain weeks will include dedicated seminars to practising commentary writing and to introducing students to, and developing, their use of technical translation terminology. There will also be two weeks during which students will take a formative mock exam to prepare them for the final exam.
