Aims

To provide a stimulating learning environment in which students develop their linguistic skills in Spanish;

To enable students to understand both written and spoken Spanish and to analyse the linguistic nature of Spanish;

To enhance and develop the oral and listening practical skills;

To assist the students in speaking Spanish accurately and fluently.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Upon completion of the module, students will have consolidated and extended  their  existing knowledge and ability to use the Spanish language and will have developed all skills: speaking, listening, reading, writing and interacting.

(LO2) Upon completion of the module, students will have developed their translation and written skills and will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the structures, lexicon and registers of Spanish.

(LO3) Upon completion of the module, students will have improved their listening and speaking skills in order to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts and using the appropriate registers in more complex or professional environments.

(S1) Communication (oral, written and visual) - presentation skills – oral.

(S2) Communication (oral, written and visual) - presentation skills - written.

(S3) Global citizenship - cultural awareness.

(S4) Communication (oral, written and visual) listening skills.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching method 1 - seminar.
Seminars consist of two hours per week of integrated skills classes, which include presentation, and practice of Spanish grammar and vocabulary in context and following a communicative approach. Students will have to do weekly preparation in advance of the seminars with the resources made available by their tutors.

Teaching method 2 - practical.
Consist of one hour per week of practical skills development sessions, which focus on oral interaction including listening and speaking activities, and following a communicative approach. Students will have to do weekly preparation in advance of the practical sessions with the resources made available by their tutors and a class test will take place between weeks 11 and 12.

Teaching method 3 - laboratory work.
Consist of one hour per week of practical skills development sessions, which focus on listening comprehension, phonetics / pronunciation, and interpreting activities. Students will w ork independently but supervised and will have to do weekly follow-up tasks with the resources made available by their tutors.

Teaching method 4 - tutorial.
Students will have at least two half hour scheduled tutorial sessions. One of them will be a group session to supervise class presentations and the other an individual follow up session to be scheduled on or around tutorial week.


Syllabus

 

Culture and society topics include: Understanding and discussing social, political, economic and work life issues in Spain and Latin America.

Grammar topics include: Combination of past tenses; Further uses of the subjunctive; Temporal subordinate clauses; Causal subordinate clauses; Concessive subordinate clauses; Conditional subordinate clauses; Indirect speech; Uses of infinitive and perfect infinitive; Prepositions and specific constructions; Articles, demonstratives and quantifiers; Lexical and grammatical devices to create textual cohesion; Enhancing vocabulary for descriptions.

Seminars Writing objectives: Writing clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects related to the students’ interests. Writing essays or reports, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view. Writing letters highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences.

Reading objectives: Reading articles and reports conce rned with contemporary problems in which the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints. Understanding contemporary literary prose.

Spoken production objectives: Presenting clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to the students’ field(s) of interest. Explaining a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Practical sessions Spoken interaction objectives: Interacting with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible. Taking active part in discussions in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining the students’ views.

Laboratory work Listening comprehension objectives: Understanding extended speech and lectures and following even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar. Understanding most TV news and current affairs programmes. Understanding the majority of films in standard dialect.
