Aims |

To provide a stimulating learning environment in which students develop their linguistic skills in Spanish; To enable students to understand both written and spoken spanish and analyse the linguistic nature of Spanish; To enhance and develop the oral and listening practical skills; To a ssist the students in speaking Spanish accurately and fluently . |
Learning Outcomes |

(LO1) Upon completion of the module, students will have consolidated and extended their existing knowledge and ability to use the Spanish language and will have developed all skills - speaking, listening, reading, writing and interacting. |

(LO2) Upon completion of the module, students will have developed their translation and written skills and will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding of the structures, lexicon and registers of Spanish. |

(LO3) Upon completion of the module, students will have improved their listening and speaking skills in order to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts and using the appropriate registers in more complex or professional environments. |

Syllabus |

Culture and society topics include: Understanding and discussing social, political, economic and work life issues in Spain and Latin America. Grammar topics include: Combination of past tenses; Future and conditional tenses; Passive and impersonal constructions; Ser vs Estar; Further uses of the subjunctive; Relative subordinate clauses and past participles; Uses of the gerund; Prepositions and specific constructions; Personal and object pronouns; Lexical and grammatical devices to create textual cohesion; Enhancing vocabulary for descriptions. Seminars Writing objectives: Writing clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects related to the students’ interests; Writing essays or reports, passing on information or giving reasons in support of or against a particular point of view; Writing letters highlighting the personal significance of events and experiences. Reading objectives: Reading articles and reports concerned with contemporary problems in w hich the writers adopt particular attitudes or viewpoints; Understanding contemporary literary prose. Spoken production objectives: Presenting clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to the students’ field(s)of interest; Explaining a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. Practical sessions Spoken interaction objectives: Interacting with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible; Taking active part in discussions in familiar contexts, accounting for and sustaining the students’ views. Laboratory work Listening comprehension objectives: Understanding extended speech and lectures and following even complex lines of argument provided the topic is reasonably familiar; Understanding most TV news and current affairs programmes; Understanding the majority of films in standard dialect. |
