Aims

To achieve greater proficiency in written and spoken Catalan;

To provide students with a range of written, oral and comprehension exercises, covering different registers and areas of vocabulary to develop students’ language learning skills;

To explore aspects of contemporary Catalan culture and literature.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: The lectures provide a comprehensive introduction to theory and analysis of contemporary Catalan culture. Tutor-led Powerpoint presentations are interspersed with short clips, images, questions, and student responses, meaning that active student participation is required throughout the lecture.

Teaching Method 2 - Seminar
Description: The seminars take place every week and involve active participation on the part of the students throughout. These classes will be integrated with further explanations of specific grammar points and will offer an opportunity for students to practice and consolidate their Catalan language skills through the analysis of Catalan texts seen during the lectures.

Topics covered during the module may include:

20th Century literature: Imperative. Adverbs. Weak pronouns; Directions and means of transport.

Translation (English to Catalan): Future tense; Projects;

20th Century art. Painting: Perfect tense. Ho; Actions in the recent past;

Translation (Catalan to English): Haver de... Comparisons; Instructions and objects;

History: Imperfect (irregular). Superlatives; Comparisons and preferences;

Translation (English to Catalan): Perfect / past tenses. Conditional tense; Complaints and emergencies;

Linguistic policy: Obligation periphrasis. Part of the body; Health and state of mind;

Translation (Catalan to English): Pluperfect tense. Present subjunctive; Narrate a story using past tenses;

Presentations (culture and society): Imperfect subjunctive; Direct and reported speech;

Presentations (culture and society): Revision session.   Latest developments in the Catalan Independence Movem ent.
