Aims

To provide students with advanced competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking in French;

To increase students' linguistic confidence;

To equip students with the speaking skills necessary in a professional and social context;

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Seminar
Description: This module is taught through 20 general language classes and 11 language reinforcement classes. In the two-hour general language classes, there will be time with both an Anglophone and a native-speaker. The language reinforcement classes are taught by a native speaker and provide opportunities to consolidate skills taught during the general language classes and for more informal conversation on aspects of French society. All classes are taught in French, apart from when a translation into English is discussed. General feedback is given in class and opportunity for individual feedback on progress is available during Tutor’s office hours and in week 7. The module is assessed by a mixture of formative and summative assignments. Formative assignments provide students with essential practice on tasks which will be assessed later on in the semester, as well as the opportunity to take risks and use newly acquired structures and lexis. Ad ditional material is available on VITAL for independent study and students are strongly encouraged to attend the Café français and to enrol for the conversation exchange scheme.

Self-Directed Learning Description: Independent learning will involve students in weekly reading, both from the reading list provided by the tutor and more widely, in preparation for seminars.


Syllabus

 

The syllabus can be found in the module handbook which can be accessed through VITAL. At the beginning of the semester students will have access via VITAL to a dossier of material which will inform the activities over the twelve weeks. The subjects of the dossiers reflect current events and preoccupations. Audio-visual material backing up the written material is shown in the second or third hour. Throughout the semester there is also the opportunity to meet individually with the native speaker for pronunciation guidance .
