Aims

To explore aspects of contemporary Catalan culture through the medium of Catalan; To develop all the skills necessary to begin to communicate confidently in spoken and written Catalan; To develop useful language learning strategies and the ability to work collaboratively and independently; T o acquire wide-ranging skills in literary analysis.


Learning Outcomes

(LO5) Upon successful completion of the module, students will be able to explain key issues in Catalan society and they will also have acquired a clear understanding of the historical, cultural, institutional and constitutional framework of Catalonia.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: The lectures provide a comprehensive introduction to theory and analysis of contemporary Catalan culture. Tutor-led Powerpoint presentations are interspersed with short clips, images, questions, and student responses, meaning that active student participation is required throughout the lecture.

Teaching Method 2 - Seminar
Description: The seminars take place every week and involve active participation on the part of the students throughout. These classes will be integrated with further explanations of specific grammar points and will offer an opportunity for students to practice and consolidate their Catalan language skills through the analysis of Catalan texts seen during the lectures.

Syllabus

 

Topics covered during the module may include:   Introduction: Basic orthography and pronunciation. Ésser. Articles;   Foreign overview of Catalonia: Present tense. Possessive adjectives;   Catalan language territory: Present tense. Simple prepositions and contractions, adverbs of place and prepositions;   The Catalan language: Present and present continuous. Interrogatives. Adjectives;   History: Present and periphrastic past;   Art: Periphrastic past. Possessives. Adjectives and agreement;   Literature: Revision basic statements, questions, negation ;   Geography: Imperfect;   Customs and traditions: More on past tenses;   Christmas in Catalonia: Relative pronouns.
