Aims

Develop an elementary competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking German;

Provide students with an understanding of elementary structures of German grammar;

Provide a deeper insight into the culture and society of the German speaking world;

Develop some intercultural understanding.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Apply elementary reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in line with the A2 level in German in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

(LO2) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the elementary structures of German.

(LO3) Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the cultures of the countries in which German is spoken.

(S1) Communication skills – elementary reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in the target language

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Seminar
Description: This module is taught through 22 hours of general language classes, which include listening comprehension classes in the language laboratory, reading comprehension exercises and grammar teaching and practice. Students have a chance to consolidate and practice the structures and vocabulary acquired in conversation, discussions, short presentations and short writing and note taking exercises. The classes will be taught in German. Students are expected to attend all classes, to hand in homework and the portfolio on time and to work through the assigned exercises independently. The module offers much accompanying material, including CDs and computer software, which can be used for independent study in the library. Regular feedback forms an integral part of the module.

Teaching Method 2 - Assessment
Description: One 90 minutes class test, including listening comprehension, reading comprehension, grammar and writing in week 12

Syllabus

 

Elementary module in German language: grammar, translation and written and spoken communication. The syllabus can be found in the module handbook which can be accessed through VITAL. Each student is issued with a weekly schedule for the module at the beginning of each semester.
