Aims

To introduce certain key principles of the constitutions.
To provide an understanding of the institutions and characteristics of the UK constitution.
To build knowledge of the sources of UK constitutional rules.
To analyse constitutional reform and codification in the UK.
To explore contemporary challenges to the UK constitution including Devolution and Brexit.
To build skills in building and communicating a logical, evidence-based argument orally and in writing.
To encourage students to acquire the habits of an independent, self-directed learner.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the law, practice and theory of the UK constitution.

(LO2) Students will be able to reflect upon and critique the development of UK constitutional law principles.

(LO3) Students will demonstrate an understanding of the concept of human rights and their protection in the UK.

(LO4) Students will demonstrate confidence in communicating critical argument, both orally and in writing.

(LO5) Students will demonstrate the habits of an active, independent learner.

What is Constitutional Law?
Characteristics of the UK Constitution.
The Separation of Powers.
Sources of the UK Constitution: The Common Law.
Sources of the UK Constitution: Legislation.
The Concept of Devolution.
Devolution Case Studies.
Brexit and the Constitution.
Protection of Human Rights in the UK.
