Aims

To equip students with the skills and habits of an active, self-directed learner. To explore key themes from a variety of academic perspectives, e.g., sociology, history, philosophy, law and literature. To develop confidence in academic research and writing; library skills; critical thinking; constructing evidence-based argument; and communication skills.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Ability to write, structure and reference a piece of academic writing appropriately.

(LO2) Confidence in introductory research and library skills.

(LO3) Speak before an audience with confidence.

(LO4) Ability to reflect on learning and set personal learning strategies and goals.

(LO5) Demonstrate an introductory understanding of the methodologies and typical key concerns of the arts and of the social sciences.

(S2) Confidence in constucting and delivering presentations.

Syllabus

 

This module runs alongside modules in Arts and Cultures (GOHI003) and Social Sciences (GOHI004) in semester one to support the acquisition of skills needed for academic success. Sessions and learning are aligned to build the skills needed for each disciplinary module assessment. Classes typically cover: time management; note-taking and classroom etiquette; academic reading and writing; research and library skills; critical thinking; creating and delivering presentations; communication and debate; IT and digital knowhow.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: Interactive lectures cover major themes. These may incorporate small group work; short tasks; discussions; and question and answer formats.

Description: Group-work will be included formative assessment

Teaching Method 3 - Practical Exercises.
Description: Study Skills is taught in a computer suite allowing students to complete set practical tasks and mini-preparation assignments to provide consolidation/support. These may include Canvas quzzes, PowerPoint and research exercises; and discussion forums.

Teaching Method 4 - Virtual Classrooms.
Zoom or Teams classrooms may be established to aid online activity outside of timetabled sessions but directed by the teaching staff.
