Aims

To introduce key themes in moral philosophy, jurisprudence, social theory and political economy in Enlightenment Scotland.

To understand core theoretical approaches and methodologies.

To identify and evaluate key theories and debate.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will possess an introductory understanding of moral philosophy, jurisprudence, social theory and political economy in Enlightenment Scotland.

(LO2) Students will demonstrate a critical appreciation of core theoretical approaches and methodologies used to understand the Scottish Enlightenment.

(LO3) Students will be able to identify and evaluate key themes and debates of the Scottish Enlightenment.

Scotland and the European Enlightenment.

Hutcheson: On utility and the moral sense.

Hume: On sympathy and the contagion of manners.

Hume: On commerce, luxury and refinement.

Kames: On historical jurisprudence.

Ferguson: On commerce and the corruptionof virtue.

Smith: On the moral sentiments.

Smith: On the wealth of nations.

Millar: On the origin of ranks and the progress of liberty.
