Aims

To explore the art of writing philosophical narrative in the Middle Ages. To identify the key philosophical ideas in the letters of Abelard and Heloise. To analyse themes in medieval thought regarding love and courtship.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will demonstrate an introductory understanding of the art of writing philosophical narratives in the Middle Ages.

(LO2) Students will be able to identify the key ideas in the letters of Abelard and Heloise.

(LO3) Students will possess a critical appreciation of key themes in medieval thought regarding love and courtship.

2. Letter I: Abelard to Philintus.

3. Letter II. Heloise to Abelard.

4. Letter III. Abelard to Heloise.

5. Letter IV. Heloise to Abelard.

6. Letter V. Heloise to Abelard.

7. Letter VI. Abelard to Eloise.

8. Pope's Epistle: 'Eloisa to Abelard'.

9. Notes and conclusions.
