Aims

To identify and evaluate links between the Bible and the historical and archaeological record.

To examine the contrasting viewpoints and scholarship on ancient Egypt and Biblical teaching.

To explore the connections between the second millenium and the Roman period.

To facilitateand encourage a critical sharing of ideas and insights.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will possess a critical understanding of the links between the Bible and the historical and archaeological record.

(LO2) Students will be able to evaluate the contrasting viewpoints and scholarship on ancient Egypt and Biblical teaching.

(LO3) Students will possess an appreciation of the inter-relations of the second millenium and the Roman period.

Syllabus

 

1. Overview of the history of Egypt and Israel.

2. What are the issues? Interpreting Archaeology,Chronology and Texts.

3. The Patriarchs in Egypt: Is there any evidence?

4. Rameses II: Pharaoh of the Exodus?

5. The Coming of the Sea Peoples: 1200-1000.

6. International Relations 1000-750BCE.

7. International Relations 750-550BCE.

8. The Persian Period 550-330BCE.

9. After Alexander: The Greek Period 330-30BCE.

10.  The New Testament & Ancient Egypt.
