Aims

To explore the philosophical themes in Gide's writing. To situate Gide's throught within the wider context of existentialism. To analyse key ideas in Gide's core text The Immoralist.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will demonstrate an introductory understanding of the key philosophical themes in Gide's writing.

(LO2) Students will be able to describe Gide's place within the wider context of existentialism.

(LO3) Students will possess a critical appreciation of the core ideas in Gide's novel The Immoralist.

Syllabus

 

Introduction: André Paul Guillaume Gide's writings. TheNobel Prize, sexuality and the struggle for Value. Thenovel The Immoralist  ( 1902): t he art of living immorally. Existential thought: criticalapproaches to morality. Reflections on key themes: ethics and moral philosophy.
