Aims

To explore the philosophical and historical influences on Kafka. To understand Kafka's writing within the wider context of existentialist philosophy. To identify and reflect on key themes in Kafka's The Trial .


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will demonstrate an introductory understanding of the philosophical and historical influences on Kafka.

(LO2) Students will possess a critical appreciation of Kafka's thought in relation to the wider context of existentialism.

(LO3) Students will be able to identify and reflect on the key themes in Kafka's The Trial.

Syllabus

 

Introduction:The many faces of Kafka.

The Trial in relation to his other writings at historical junctures.

Existential thought: Critical approaches and cultural trends.

“ Whatis the meaning of life?” Life as inherently absurd and purposeless.
