Aims

To identify and evaluate the connections between material in the Bible and the literary record from ancient Egypt.

To explore ancient Egyptian narrative, poetry, wisdom teaching and prophecy.

To evaluate the contrasting scholarship on the Bible an ancient Egypt's literary record.

To encourage and facilitate the sharing of ideas and insight.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will be able to identify and evaluate the connections between the Bible and the literary record from ancient Egypt.

(LO2) Students will acquire an introductory understanding of ancient Egyptian narrative, poetry, wisdom teaching and prophecy.

(LO3) Students will demonstrate the ability to evaluate the contrasting viewpoints and scholarship on the Bible and ancient Egypt's literary record.

Syllabus

 

1. Creation stories from Egypt and the Bible.

2. Words of the Wise: Egyptian Wisdom & the Book of Proverbs.

3.  Words of the Wise: Egyptian Wisdom & Job and Ecclesiastes.

4.  Songs of Praise: Egyptian Worship and the Book of Psalm.s

5.  Travelers' Tales: Sinuhe, Shipwrecked Sailor,Jonah.

6.  The Prophets & Egypt: Isaiah and Jeremiah.

7.  The Prophets and Egypt: Ezekiel and Daniel.

8.  Between the Testaments: Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha & the Hellenistic world.

9.  Roman Egypt and the literature of the New Testament.

10. Egypt and the Bible: A reassessment.
