Aims

This module introduces a number of key principles of the UK constitution including functions and form of a constitution; institutions and characteristics of the UK constitution; sources of UK constitutional rules; and constitutional reform and codification in the UK. It also explores some contemporary challenges to the UK constitution such as Devolution and Brexit.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the law, practice and theory of the UK constitution.

(LO2) Students will be able to reflect upon and critique the development of UK constitutional law principles.

(LO3) Students will demonstrate an understanding of the concept of human rights and their protection in the UK.

(LO4) Students will demonstrate confidence in communicating critical argument, both orally and in writing.

(LO5) Students will demonstrate the habits of an active, independent learner.

Introduction: Foundational Questions.
What is Constitutional Law?
Characteristics of the UK Constitution.
The Separation of Powers.
Sources of the UK Constitution: The Common Law.
Sources of the UK Constitution: Legislation.
The Concept of Devolution.
Devolution Case Studies.
Brexit and the Constitution.
Protection of Human Rights in the UK.

Guided Tasks (in class and on line forums).
