Aims

To understand the political and theological situation at the beginning of the 16th century. To examine the reasons for the success of Luther’s Reformation ideas. To compare the theological stance of the various Protestant Reformers including Luther, Calvin and Zwingli. To evaluate the responses of the Catholic Church in the Counter Reformation.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will demonstrate an understanding of the political and theological situation at the start of the 16th century.

(LO2) Students will be able to articulate the reasons for the success of Luther's reforming ideas.

(LO3) Students will be able to contrast the theological stance of various protestant reformers including Luther, Calvin and Zwingli.

(LO4) Students will be able to describe and critique the responses of the Catholic Church in the Counter Reformation.

1. Churchand State in 1500.

2. The Papacy in the early 16th century.

3. Luther’s early life.

4. Luther’s protest and its impact.

5. Lutherand Zwingli.

6. The Radical Reformation.

7. Calvin and the Reformed Tradition.

8. The initial response of the Catholic Church.

9. The Counter Reformation and its impact.

10. Churchand State in 1600.
