Aims

To examine the reasons for Henry VIII’s break with Rome. To consider the changing theological context throughout the Tudor period. To explore the nature and extent of Catholic and Non-conformist dissent.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will be able to articulate the reasons for Henry VIII's break with Rome.

(LO2) Students will be able to contrast the theological implications of the different policies of Edward, Mary and Elizabeth.

(LO3) Students will possess an understanding of the emergence of the Anglican Church settlement in Elizabeth's reign.

(LO4) Students will demonstrate an appreciation of the situation of both Catholic and Nonconformist dissent by 1600.

1. 1485-1509 Church and state under Henry VII.

2. 1509-25 The early reign of Henry VIII. 3.1525-32 “The King’s Great Matter”.

4. 1532-40 The break with Rome.

5. 1540-47 The last years of Henry VIII.

6. 1547-53 The reign of Edward VI.

7. 1553-58 The reign of Mary I.

8. 1558-73 The early years of Elizabeth I.

9. 1573-88 The middle years of Elizabeth I.

10 1588-1603 The last years of Elizabeth I.
