Aims

The aim of this module i s to develop the ability of academic staff to plan, develop, implement and evaluate educationally effective learning, teaching and assessment utilising digital learning technologies and new emerging forms of pedagogy in higher education.

Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Identify and design effectivelearning activities and assessment tasks utilising digital technologies to achieve the required learning outcomes for either a specific teaching session, module or programme.

(LO2) Critically evaluate the potential application of emerging models andapproaches to higher education provision that utilise digital learning technologies, such as campus-based applications and online distance learning.

(LO3) Critically reflect on your digitalskills and digital literacies to support your effective application of digital technologies within your learning and teaching, and create an improvement plan.

(LO4) Identify and plan practicalopportunities to support the development of student digital skills and digitalliteracies.

(S1) Digital scholarship participating in emerging academic, professional and research practices that depend on digital systems

(S2) Digital learning technologies - e-assessment, communication, content creation.

(S3) Digital literacy - online communication, collaboration and research.

Syllabus

A range of topics and concepts will be introduced as part of the module, but participants will be encouraged to explore in more detail specific aspects of the syllabus that are of interest and relevant to their subject area.

Designing learning activities and assessment tasks using digital technologies:
'Designing for learning' design models and processes to support effective educational change in higher education; Capturing and visualising effective educational practice;

Applying and adapting effective educational designs to new learning contexts; Evaluating existing research and case studies of effective educational practice.

Exploring emerging and innovative approaches to higher educational provision utilising digital technologies: Overview to the history and future of learning technologies in higher education; Models of campus-based learning e.g. flipped classrooms; ‘Hyflex’ models of blended learning; Emerging pedagogical ideas and approaches;
Online distance learning and MOOC’s; Open educational resources; Alternatives to traditional higher educational provision; Key drivers potentially effecting future higher education provision; Design of physical learning spaces; Overview to ‘disruptive technologies’ and their potential impact on higher education.

Student experience and expectations for using digital technologies in their learning: Exploration and application of a range of digital learning technologies to support learning and teaching; Student experiences and expectations for using digital learning technologies; Action plan for developing own and student’s digital skills and digital literacies.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Laboratory Work
Description: Software practicals
Attendance Recorded: Yes
Notes: Each session workshop will include a practical session to develop participants technical e-learning and digital literacy skills using a range of learning technologies.

Teaching Method 2 - Online
Description: Online resources and activities within VITAL
Attendance Recorded: Not yet decided
Notes: Participants will be expected to engage with and discuss online a range of case studies, short e-lectures, other electronic resources and online activities in advance of the 5 module session workshops.

Teaching Method 3 - Workshop
Description: Classroom workshops to support online resources in VITAL
Attendance Recorded: Not yet decided
Notes: The module consists of 5 'face to face' workshop sessions that will consolidate and apply topics and concepts introduced online.

Teaching Method 4 - Assessment
Description: Assessment support workshop
Attendance Recorded: Not yet decided
Notes: Timetabled assessment support.

Self-Directed Learning Description: Participants will be expected to engage in extensive independent learning and activities outside of the scheduled online and face to face teaching sessions.
It is expected that you will use this independent learning time to:
• Deepen and explore through your own independent research concepts and topics introduced in the module using the provided online learning resources.
• Develop your practical skills to use different digital technologies from the skills learnt in the scheduled practical workshops.
• Gather impact evidence and reflect on the implementation of any learning activities supported by digital technologies, particualry using any student feedback data.
• Research and review relevant published pedagogic research literature.
• Engage in discussions with peers and students on their experiences of using digital technologies to support learning.
• Complete assessment tasks and assignments. As a guide, expect to spend approximately 70 hours to complete the module assessment.
