Aims

1. To develop confidence in understanding and communicating complex ideas.

2 . To develop skills in research, collaborative learning and preparation of a group presentation.

3. To provide an overview of Viking activity in Britain and its long term political and cultural impact.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will have developed confidence in understanding and communicating complex ideas in written language.

(LO2) Students will be able to research a topic within the subject area, be better able to work collaboratively in this research and to produce a piece of work based on that research.

(LO3) Students will be able to demonstrate familiarity with a range of sources (historical, archaeological, onomastic) relating to viking activity in Britain.

· The beginning of the Viking Age
· Vikings in the Northern Isles
· Vikings in the Western Isles
· Vikings in England: Conquest and colonisation
· The Making of England
· The Making of Scotland and Wales
· The End of the Viking Age


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - seminar
Description: Each week students will attend 2 x 2hr sessions. These will consist of short lecture style sessions interspersed with practical activities and group discussion.

Notes: The summer school programme consists of standardised module formats where by students attend 6 x 2 hr sessions over a 3 week period.

This assessment requires students to work as a team to research and prepare a presentation and then deliver it, which is a common activity in professional jobs. This assessment requires students to  15 minutes    25
