Aims

The main aims of the module are:

·        to develop an appreciation and understanding of the poetry and prose of the Renaissance;

·        to develop a sense of the nature of the English literary Renaissance and of the generic expectations and reading methods of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.


Learning Outcomes

  

On completing this module students will be able to demonstrate:
an enhanced sense of the range of writing of the period;

 

an understanding of Renaissance literary expectations and reading methods;

enhanced reading skills in relation to literature of the period;

knowledge and understanding of the cultural and historical contexts in which Renaissance literature is situated.

The sonnets of Wyatt, Sidney, and other English writers in the tradition of Petrarch 

Sidney''s, Apology for Poetry 

Marlowe''s Hero and Leander and the tradition of Ovid

Renaissance Romances

Essays of Montaigne as contributing to English Renaisance thought

Nashe, The Unfortunate Traveller

Spenser,The Faerie Queene

The poetry of Donne, Jonson, Herbert, and Marvell

Women''s rwiting from the Renaissance era 

Milton''s early poetry (incl. Lycidas and Comus)

The Cavalier Poets (Lovelace, Suckling, Herrick, Carew)
