To produce an extended piece of research in an English-based subject.
To develop specialist subject knowledge in the student's chosen area of research.
To gain experience of postgraduate-level academic research in English, with a view to possible future progression to doctoral research.
To make an original contribution to knowledge in the field of English (Language and/or Literature).

The specific content will vary according to the individual research project and will be determined by the student in collaboration with his or her supervisor(s). There will be 12 hours of one-to-one supervision throughout semester 2/the summer (for part-time students, these meetings will usually be spread out over semester 2 of the first year/the second year, up until the submission of the dissertation).

There will be a total of 12 hours of meetings with the supervisor(s) – these one-to-one consultations can be scheduled flexibly throughout semester 2/up to the deadline for submission of the dissertation (September).
