Aims

The aims of the module are: To give students an opportunity to develop practical prose writing skills in conjunction with the development of critical and theoretical reading in relation to prose genres; To extend awareness of the function and importance of the drafting process in relation to prose; To foster independent reading of contemporary literature in prose; To refine student understanding of the importance of literary models in the development of their own writing practice.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) By the end of the module students will have learned compositional techniques and methods (including drafting and reflection skills) appropriate to the genre.

(LO2) Students will be able to draw on a range of literary techniques, e.g. image, symbol, point of view.

(LO3) Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of genre and an awareness of the range of options available to the short story writer.

(LO4) Students will be able to constructively edit and evaluate their own prose and that of their peers.

(LO5) Students will be able to reflect on various aspects of the creative process.

Syllabus

 

Topics covered include: The short story as genre. Experiments with point of view. Plot and Pace (short story and novel). Character. Beginnings and Endings. Image and symbol. Autobiography.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Small group, synchronous
Description: 1 hour; students will meet weekly in a small group and discuss short stories and will participate in a range of creative writing exercises and activities. Students may be asked to write in class, and to read out their work.

Teaching Method 2 – Whole cohort, synchronous or asynchronous
Description: 1 hour; Session considering techniques and approaches to prose creative writing.
Attendance Recoded: No

Notes: Students will be introduced to a range of techniques and writing exercises that will allow them to continue writing and developing their own writing techniques outside scheduled teaching time. As the semester progresses increased time will be spent offering critical feedback on an individual's work in progress.
Unscheduled Directed Student Hours (time spent away from the timetabled sessions but directed by the teaching staff): Students will be expecte d to spend approximately 126 hours independently on their creative work outside scheduled teaching time.
