Aims

To equip the department's postgraduate students with the necessary research skills to make effective, critical interventions in the world of the professional study of English Literature. To equip students with the necessary presentational skills for advanced study in English Literature, including bibliographic and referencing conventions.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) By the end of this module, students will be able to:Demonstrate imaginative,discriminating and systematic use of the wide range of traditional and electronic resources available for producing bibliographies.

(LO2) Demonstrate effective presentational skills for advanced literary study

(LO3) Critically evaluate secondary literature and demonstrate advanced skills in reviewing current scholarship

Syllabus

 

The module covers the following topics: Designing research questions Defining the scope and methodology of a research project Academic writing Library skills including use of online databases Plagiarism and academic integrity Approaches to literary theory Reflecting on individual research practices Giving and using feedback


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Seminar
Description: 90-minute seminars will explore a range of topics related to academic research in English literature. The syllabus includes sessions focusing on questions of research project design and the use of literary theory alongside practical skills-building seminars on academic writing technique, use of library resources and appropriate uses of secondary sources.
