Aims

To introduce you to a wide range of texts from the Romantic and pre-Romantic period. To improve reading skills specific to those texts. To give you an informed sense of the wider cultural history of the time and the interconnections between different forms of writing in the period.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Demonstrate awareness of a range of literary forms and idioms in English Literature from c. 1770 to c. 1830

(LO2) Show an awareness of main issues in the literature of the period

(LO3) Relate elements of this literature to specific historical and cultural contexts

(LO4) Investigate these issues in individual and collaborative discussion

(LO5) Plan, research, and execute an assessed essay showing the application of the above skills, and demonstrate these skills and appropriate knowledge in a three-hour examination

Syllabus

 

The module focuses on the period of English literature of the Romantic period (roughly 1770-1830).  The two lectures each week will cover a range of authors and themes in the period. Because of time constraints, not all texts / themes will be covered in the tutorials.  The module contains appreciably more poetry than prose.

The subject of each week's tutorial will be decided by the individual tutor, however, a typical tutorial syllabus (based on the lectures) might be as follows:
Week 1 – Introduction to Romantic literature
Week 2 – Poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Week 3 – Coleridge and Wordsworth, Lyrical Ballads
Week 4 – William Wordsworth, The Prelude
Week 5 – William Blake, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell
Week 6 – William Blake, Songs of Innocence and of Experience Week 7 – Poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley
Week 8 - Jane Austen, Persuasion
Week 9 – Poetry of Felici a Hemans
Week 10 – Poetry of John Keats
Week 11 – Thomas De Quincey, The Confessions of an English Opium Eater
Week 12 - Review and exam preparation
