Aims

To understand materials performance indices and apply materials selection charts and software

To understand the processing, microstructure and mechanical properties of ceramics and polymers

To investigate the manufacturing techniques commonly used to produce composite structures and understand the properties of composite materials.

Knowledge and understanding of materials performance indices and materials selection using materials properties charts and CES software

Knowledge and understanding of processing techniques, microstructures and mechnical properties of ceramics and polymers

Knowledge and understanding of manufacturing techniques and properties of composite materials


Syllabus

Materials selection: The need for materials selection; derivation of performance indices for mechanical design; material property charts to aid the selection process.

Process Selection: considerations in selecting materials processing technologies.

Ceramics: Processing, microstructure, and properties.

Polymers: Structure, manufacturing techniques, joining techniques, mechanical properties.

Composite materials: Fibre and matrix types, manufacturing techniques and typical applications.
