Aims |
|
1. To provide a set of tools and skills that will help prepare the students for conducting research once they start their PhD work after graduating from the MRes programme. 2. To provide students with an understanding of the research environment (e.g. REF) and institutional / government priorities associated with delivering high-quality research (e.g. Impact) within UK universities. In addition, to highlight the research funding landscape, and the different mechanisms for communicating research outcomes – such as conferences, colloquia, for a/meetings, journals, etc. 3. To emphasise the importance of establishing a research profile and building a network of contacts, varied in nature and disciplines. In addition, to gain guidance on the basics and also good practice with promoting research findings – through posters, abstracts, conferences and journals – to both specialist and general audiences. 4. To gain insights into the requirements and expectations of publishing organisations, such intelligence provided by conference organisers and journal editors. 5. To extend the reach of research publications, both as sources of information and as communication tools, into applied/trade literature – and to link this to the emerging priority of impact case-studies. |

Syllabus |
|
The content of this module is focuses on building a research profile, effective abstract writing, and development of a potential impact case study. This will complement the preparation for the submission of a draft international conference/journal paper to complete the associated MRes module RISK661. Students will receive guidance on effective writing of academic papers, drawing on in-house expertise from Risk Institute / CDT members along with input from a number of publishing companies. |
