Aims

To critically engage students in various aspects of innovative and entrepreneurial activity

To develop a knowledge, understanding and mastery of enterprise-related concepts and current development tools.

To stimulate an appreciation of modern enterprise challenges and the importance of entrepreneurial activity in relation to organisational success.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) On successful completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and mastery of the key aspects of enterprise activities (Marketing, Management of Technology, Entrepreneurship, Business Planning, Legislation, Ethics).

(LO2) On successful completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and mastery of the theory on technology assessment, innovation and competitive positioning.

(LO3) On successful completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and mastery of the relationships between innovation, technology and commercial viability.

(LO4) On successful completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and mastery of the main differences between general management and innovation / enterprise processes.

(LO5) On successful completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and mastery of the process of business planning and financing new business start-ups.

(LO6) On successful completion of the module, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and mastery of the modern approach to innovation management and professional ethics.

(S2) Using software to prepare a plan for a technology-based business.

(S3) Literacy application of literacy, ability to produce clear, structured written work and oral literacy - including listening and questioning

1 The Enterprise Economy Character of the enterprise economy, role of government in its development. The knowledge based networked economy.

2 Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurship & Ethics Entrepreneurship and Entrepreneurship, definitions and discussion. Enterprise in the higher education curriculum.

3 The Business Plan/Investment Proposal Part I The process of business planning and the construction of an investment proposal.

4 The Business Plan/Investment Proposal Part II The process of business planning and the construction of an investment proposal.

5 Sources of Innovation and Opportunity Market research, technology analysis, innovation management and new product concept generation. Businesses as solution generators, makers and supporters.

6 Business Environment Analysis Competitiveness analysis. Competition analysis. Industry analysis. Customer and market research.

7 Organisational Design Organisation structure, organisation types, generic s trategies, value chain, top down design, business objectives cascading. Business definitions, competency, knowledge profiles. Job design. Standard practices.

8 Business Legal and Regulatory Framework with Ethics IPR, patents, design protections, trademarks and logos, business constitutions, Directors’ duties and responsibilities. The legal regulatory framework for health and safety, environment protection, employment, data security.

9 Business Finance Cash flow, investment, profit and loss, balance sheet.

10 Implementing the Plan with Ethics The managing process. Managing change. Maintaining and improving performance. Relationship between learning, problem solving and performance improvement. Recruitment and selection.

11 Marketing The basics of marketing and promotion.

12 Managing Technology Efficient technology management in the modern business environment.
