Aims |
This module aims to further develop students' experience of the variety of UK biota and the ability to carry out a research project, both achieved through group work on a field class. |
Learning Outcomes |
(LO1) Increased understanding of the behaviour, ecology or physiology of marine organisms using UK species as model study species. |
(LO2) Further develops the ability to carry out a research project using approaches most commonly used in our sector. |
(LO3) Experience group working in the context of a research project. |
Syllabus |
Students take part in a one-week field class, usually in September prior to the start of Year Three. Students will work in small groups (~3) under the close supervision of a member of staff. Groups will design a small-scale research project, collect and analyse data before presenting them to staff and students on the field course. A group project report will then be submitted after the field class. |
Teaching and Learning Strategies |
During the field class, groups of students will collaborate together in the role of researchers to develop, execute and complete a research project in their Honours field. Students will be briefed on how to make a success of group working at the start of the module (on the field class) and then subsequently guided in their research projects by academic staff acting as project supervisors. The fruits of their research, acquired through an active learning approach and the success of their collaborative group work will be assessed via a group oral presentation during the field class and a subsequent project report. |
