Aims

To develop the ability to carry out an individual research project building on the knowledge and skills acquired elsewhere in the programme.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) In a format suitable for their programme and discipline area, students will demonstrate the ability to:

(LO2) Execute an individual research project

(LO3) Seek appropriate advice and support when necessary and plan their time accordingly

(LO4) Select appropriate research strategies and undertake appropriate methods of data collection and analysis

(LO5) Keep clear records of their project and present these in a portfolio of research evidence

(LO6) Be able to synthesize different information sources to form coherent arguments and relate research findings to relevant applied issues

(LO7) Write up the results of the research project and interpret the findings in light of the broader knowledge base and literature

(LO8) Use bibliographies, referencing and citations in the appropriate and correct manner to support their academic work undertaken.

Syllabus

 

Introductory seminar given by the module coordinator in Semester two;

Regular meetings with supervisor (weekly or bi-weekly dependent on work schedule);

Monthly informal presentation of preliminary results to research group;

Compilation of evidence for research portfolio including keeping a contemporaneous record of work undertaken, ideas and notes from discussions with colleagues and supervisor;

Complete research dissertation in a style agreed with project supervisor.
