Aims

To train students to make observations, collect and record data using basic oceanographic equipment.
To train students to carry out analytical work in laboratory conditions.
To improve students' oral and written communication skills, including their ability to reference correctly.
To improve students' numerical skills, specifically in statistics.
To enthuse students about ocean sciences through reading and discussing topics selected for oral presentation.

Syllabus

 

Semester 1: Fieldwork weekend in North Wales, Statistical analysis of data collected during fieldwork, Poster production and introduction to Synoptic Meterology including formative presentations, literature (Web of Science) and references tool (Endnote software), development of writing skills, , including the University's policy on academic integrity, tutor/tutees meetings (one every 3 weeks)

Semester 2: Development of presentation skills through summative group oral presentations ; Development of laboratory and analytical skills; introduction to an oceanographic visualisation tool (ODV: Ocean Data View), tutor/tutees meetings (one every 3 weeks).
