Aims

This module aims to enable students to understand how management consulting projects are led and delivered in real life. Moreover it enables students to understand how international business knowledge taught in other parts of their programme of study can be combined, synthesised and applied to a practical real-life situation. This module also aims to enhance students’ employability skills and future career prospects.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Semester 1
Teaching Method 1: Lectures
Scheduled Directed Student Hours: 12 hours
Description: 6 lectures of 2 hours each will be delivered in semester 1

Teaching Method 2: Seminars
Scheduled Directed Student Hours: 3.5 hours
Description: In semester 1 students will attend 4 seminars, 1 hour each (with the exception of the seminars that are led by the client organisation which is going to be 30min). The first seminar will be led by the module leader/ULMS teaching staff and will include working together with the students to develop an initial action plan after the presentation of the project brief by the client organisation. The second seminar will be led by the students (module leader/ULMS teaching staff to be present) and students will have to start working on the consultancy project. The third seminar will be led by the client organisation. The client organisation will have to meet with each of the student undertaking their project for 30minutes minimum to answer any questions and provide guidance (the module leader/teaching staff will not be present but available on the day to assist in the organisation). The fourth seminar will be led by the students (module leader/ULMS teaching staff to be present) and students will have to continue working on the consultancy project and start incorporating the feedback received from the client organisation.

Description: In semester 2 students will attend 5 seminars, 1 hour each (with the exception of the seminars that are led by the client organisation which is going to be 30min). The second seminar will be led by the module leader/ULMS teaching staff and will be on the topic of data analysis. The third seminar will be led by the client organisation. The client organisation will have to meet with each of the student undertaking their project for 30minutes minimum to answer any questions and provide guidance (the module leader/teaching staff will not be present but available on the day to assist in the organisation). The fourth seminar will be led by the students (module leader/ULMS teaching staff to be present) and students will have work on the consultancy project. The fifth seminar will be led by the students (module leader/ULMS teaching staff to be present) and students will have work on the consultancy project. The sixth seminar will be led by the client organisation. 1. Introduction to Management Consultancy (why companies use consultants, types/roles and activities of management consultants, management consultancy industry)
2. Professional and ethical considerations in management consultancy
3. Consultancy initial process (client-consultant relationship, setting the consultancy project’s goals/task, developing the consultancy research plan)
4. Structuring the problem (multi-level problem solving, the principles of structuring, consultants’ models for problem solving, sequential analysis problem solving)
5. Designing analysis (developing hypotheses, designing analysis for hypotheses testing)
6. Data collection (types of data, methods of data collection, issues in data collection)
7. Data analysis (qualitative and quantitative)
8. Developing solutions (multi-level solution development)
9. Presenting solutions (importance of presentation on consultancy, pitfalls, un derstanding the audience, design the presentation, delivery techniques)
10. Client Organisation presenting the project brief
11. Revision from the module leader and Revision/Q&A from the Client organisation
