Aims

To explain and demonstrate the use of portfolio management, including return and risk measurement, portfolio planning, and portfolio construction.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will be able to demonstrate a systematic understanding, knowledge and critical awareness of the nature, concepts and construction of portfolios, having regard for the type of investor.

(LO2) Students will be able to demonstrate the creative application of knowledge, understanding and techniques underlying portfolio management strategies including risk management strategies in uncertain contexts.

(LO3) Students will be able to demonstrate conceptual and practical understanding of the understanding of performance evaluation of portfolios at the forefront of current practice.

(S1) Adaptability
Students will be able to adapt different portfolio management concepts and theories according to the environment, market and country which are considered.

(S2) Problem solving
Students will be able to dynamically assess the different problems/questions posed to them which will resemble real-life situations and applications.

(S3) Numeracy
Students will learn how to transform theoretical concepts into formulae and solve them with financial calculators/excel.

(S4) Commercial awareness
Students will be aware of the commercial side of the portfolio management theory, different levels of risk, returns and investment advisers.

(S5) Organisation skills
Students will be able to plan the module activities and commitments in order to fulfil the learning outcomes.

(S6) Written communication skills
Students will be able to clearly express themselves about portfolio management topics and investments.

(S7) International awareness
Students will be aware of some different assets and investments across countries as well as of international diversification strategies.

(S8) Lifelong learning
Students will be learning concepts and topics which will be useful for their job market and practical personal investment life.

(S9) Ethical awareness
Students will be aware of basic ethical issues in the portfolio management world and surrounding financial institutions, and investment funds.

Management of individual/family investor portfolios;

Management of institutional investor portfolios;

Pension plans and employee benefit funds;

Investment manager selection;

Other institutional investors;

Mutual funds, pooled funds, and ETFs;

Economic analysis and setting capital market expectations;

Tax efficiency;

Asset allocation including currency overlay;

Portfolio construction and revision;

Equity portfolio management strategies;

Fixed income portfolio management strategies;

Alternative investments management strategies;

Risk management;

Execution of portfolio decisions (trading);

Performance evaluation;

Presentation of performance results.
