Aims

The overall aim of the module is to provide a comprehensive and high level education in the subject of entrepreneurial business innovations. The module is tailored to those who have not studied this subject area in depth before but who seek to develop the knowledge and skills required for a future career as an entrepreneurial manager or founder and to provide first-hand experience of how entrepreneurial firms seek to maximise the value of innovations in numerous different strategic ways. Specifically, the module aims:

To introduce students to the complexities and varieties of innovations;

To determine which innovations have commercial value and which do not;

To develop skills which help recognition of business innovations in products, processes and practices;

To expose students to entrepreneurial innovation projects and activities.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Be able to develop subject specific knowledge and understanding of the entrepreneurship and innovation research literature;

(LO2) Be capable of identifying theoretical and practical linkages between entrepreneurialism, innovation and management of both;

(LO3) Develop flexibility and teamwork by selecting appropriate leadership styles for different situations;

(LO4) Build on learning from ULMS515 to synthesise ideas and concepts from an appropriate body of literature;

(LO5) Develop critical awareness of research in the subject area literature through the year long programme of continuous writing improvement workshops with guidance and supervision.

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture

Teaching Method 3 - Collaborative Learning
Description: Self-directed group video production on specific content (12 hours per semester)

Self-Directed Learning Description: Due to the manner of the module combining both group work and individual work, a relatively high percentage of students’ self-directed learning time is expected to be invested in reading from the reading list, practicing application of knowledge gained in the small firms they are teamed with and producing both creative but relevant video content and in developing their industry report. Students will also use this time to prepare for their individual written report and collaborating with local small firms.
