Aims

To give students the opportunity to research a topic related to their programme of study, which is not covered in depth by any taught module being offered;

To provide the opportunity to develop critical understanding of relevant theoretical and empirical literature and acquire and apply skills and knowledge to investigate specific research question(s);

To give students the opportunity to plan and manage their own research and to produce an extended written dissertation. The exact nature of knowledge development in this module will be dependent upon the nature of the research project undertaken.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Ability to demonstrate awareness of current research and advanced scholarship in relation to their chosen topic;

(LO2) Ability to demonstrate critical awareness of current problems and/or new insights in relation to their chosen dissertation topic and area of professional practice;

(LO3) Ability to critique the strengths and weaknesses associated with those methodological approaches in relation to their chosen topic area;

(LO4) Ability to plan how they will identify and collect appropriate and meaningful evidence in order to investigate fully their selected organisational issue;

(LO5) Ability to demonstrate a critical awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of evidence;

(LO6) Ability to plan a large independent study project that includes literature search, data collection, data analysis and writing up;

(LO7) Ability to demonstrate critical awareness of current theories, models, concepts, ideas and writing related to the management and/or organisational problem;

(LO8) Ability to critically evaluate current research and scholarship;

(LO9) Ability to select appropriate models and frameworks to investigate management and organisational issues and to deduce frameworks, formulate solutions, or to test effectively, any hypothesis presented;

(LO10) Ability to evaluate, select, justify and apply appropriate research methods to the chosen area of study, in order to ensure that the evidence generated, its analysis and the conclusions drawn from it are valid, reliable and ethical;
