Aims

This module aims to familiarise students with the unique and contrasting business environment in the Asia Pacific region and to use concepts and theories from the international business/management literature to evaluate and explain this environment


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Evaluate the impact of regional economic integration in the Asia Pacific region on trade and foreign direct investment within and outside of the Asia Pacific countries;

(LO2) Appreciate and identify the consequences of national differences in the business and management systems of the Asia Pacific region;

(LO3) Analyse and synthesise critical debates in the development of the Asia Pacific economies and the conduct of industrial policy;

(LO4) Evaluate the similarities and differences in social and relational capital and the implications for social networks and the consequences for the conduct of business in the major Asia Pacific economies;

(LO5) Appraise the strategic issues involved in entering Asia Pacific markets;

(LO6) Conduct a comparative analysis of different management systems in the major countries of the Asia Pacific region.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: The weekly lecture will develop the core themes. This will provide a basic
framework within which students must read around the concepts and issues in
order to gain a broader insight. Lecture notes will be placed on VITAL on the day
preceding the lecture.

Teaching Method 2 - Seminar
Description: Seminars and workshops will reinforce understanding and students should take the opportunity to resolve problems by asking appropriate questions. Seminar and workshop activities will require students to complete directed reading. Information about the module will be posted in the relevant section of the VITAL system and students should use this
facility on a regular basis. Lecture notes will be placed on VITAL on the day
preceding the lecture.

Asia Pacific economic development and industrial policy;

The East Asian ‘development model’ – distinguishing characteristics and transferability;

The role of social and relational capital; negotiating with Asia Pacific businesses and understand cultural diversity Chinese Guanxi;

Entering Asia Pacific markets – dealing with the ‘informational void’;

Branding in Asia Pacific Chinese, Japanese and Korean management systems;

Transfer of HR practices to Asia Pacific.
