Aims

Study the interface between strategy and corporate governance to understand and evaluate organisational performance and effectiveness.
Relate concepts of management; organization; strategy and governance.
Examine the nature of management as the process that brings together strategy and governance.
Consider what is involved in formulating and managing strategy and change.
Examine the role of boards of directors as strategic decision-making groups.
Evaluate board effectiveness including the role and contribution of boards and directors in strategy, organisational performance and effectiveness.

Lectures are no longer than one hour blocks and will provide students with the opportunities to engage and discuss.

Students will be given opportunities to explore relevant theories, concepts, models relating to Strategy and Governance. These will be applied to real situations and organisations from the students experience to reflect on best practice in Strategy and Governance.

In order to broaden the range of contexts and situations studied, students will also be asked to consider a range of simulated and real situations using case studies to apply relevant theories, concepts, models relating to Strategy and Governance.

Students will be expected to complete schedule directed module pre-reading, to prepare for some exercises, tasks and assessments during the module and to research, develop and write a final written assessment. In addition to the suggested readings, students might be expected to develop their own reading, research and preparation of topics for the final assessment.

Perspectives and techniques of strategy, for example, planning and resource-based.
views, stakeholder analysis, strategic planning, scenario planning and business modelling.
Systems of Governance (including national & sector varieties).
The role of boards as strategic decision-making groups
Effective and ineffective boards and directors, including non-executives and company Chairs.
Organizational Change and Transformation.
Organizational Performance, Effectiveness, Success and Failure.

Materials will be made available to students via VITAL and students will also be expected to read additional materials from the suggested and required reading list using online library resources
