Aims

Understand the philosophical history of social scientific research and how this affects management research in particular;

Be familiar with debates about the purpose of management research, the process of knowledge creation and dissemination into managerial practice;

Understand a range of concepts in management research, including positivism and interpretivism; objectivism and constructionism; modernism and postmodernism; quantitative and qualitative, and be able to apply them critically;

Have a critical awareness of the influence of power, politics and ethics on management research;

Have an appreciation of how understandings of management research affect the theory and practice of action research.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) The history and development of social investigation specifically relevant to social science and management research in particular;

(LO2) Historical underpinnings of action research (e.g., within pragmatism, symbolic interactionism, and phenomenology);

(LO3) How positivist, idealist and critical approaches to management research have been conducted;

(LO4) Postmodern approaches in the construction of management knowledge;

(LO5) Power, politics and ethics in management research;

(LO6) Concepts, design and strategy with a particular emphasis on action research.

Syllabus

 

The syllabus includes:

What is social science and how is it relevant to knowledge construction for management;

What is meant by ‘cause’ and how it relates to ‘effect’;

The general character of positivism, idealism, realism and postmodernism and their relevance to management research;

The role of social constructionism in knowledge creation;

Text, Grounded Theory and Hermeneutics;

Measurement, classification, description and exploration;

Knowledge creation and the action research project.
