Aims

To introduce students to the key models and concepts within finance and data analysis as they relate to the football industry;

To develop students’ knowledge and skills to enable them to understand the key financial documents and ratios within the football industry;

To provide students with the knowledge and skills to understand data analysis techniques and apply them to the football industry.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) To understand and utilise key financial documents, the balance sheet, Cash Flow Forecast and Profit and Loss Statements as they apply to the football industry

(LO2) To understand key ratios in football such as wages to turnover and their implications for clubs

(LO3) To understand and critically reflect upon UEFA’s Financial Fairplay strategy

(LO4) To understand and critically reflect upon the growing importance of data analysis in football and how its use can improve decision-making.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description:

Notes: Standard lecturers will be delivered over a 2 day block period. Class discussions and activities will be encouraged

Teaching Method 2 - Seminar
Description:

Notes: Guest speakers from within the football industry will add to the traditional lecturing format. An opportunity for Q+A with expert speakers will be provided.

Teaching Method 3 - Group Project
Description:
Attendance Recorded: Not yet decided
Notes: Opportunities will be provided for unassessed group work during the course of this module and the students will then undertake assessed group work on the finances of clubs in a league of their choice.
